Why fasting makes no sense/ How to actually forgo an unwanted behavious

Are you all doing well? Are you all properly satiated? Because today, we are going to talk about fasting.
As for the country where I live, the Lent started this wednesday (I really thought, it would start on a monday or so) and now, somehow a lot of people are talking about fasting and what they want to fast. I think, the ideas mentioned the most are fasting sweets, smarphone usage or some kind of unhealthy food. So, fasting basically comes down to a time, where people forgo something, that they think to be in some way damaging for their life, health, career etc.
Therefore, people fasting a certain thing, think this thing to be harmful or not neccessary or consuming.

This is the point, when I wonder why people only fast this particular thing for a certain period of time instead of banishing it from their whole life completely. If they see it to be exetremely damaging but not neccessary for surv
iving (as they manage to life without it for about five weeks), why do they keep using the thing for the rest of the year? Are people fasting something for about a twefth part of the year actually convince that this will have remarkable effects on their lifes?
I believe, that fasting will not change somebody's behavior on something but is just a way of proving willpowe and convincing one's conscience to do good.
Fasting, originally, was once a way to enable self- reflexion and deeper thinking for a certain period of timeby quiting anything 'distracting' like food or water. In our cnsumtion- based society, it has become a temporary forgoing of things, we do not even want to be dependent on.

When someone considers fasting something like a certain kind of food or TV usage, the person should not do it this way. What I recommend instead, is doing the following:
1) Ask yourself, what it is, that you want to forgo. Do not simly say 'my smartphone' but figure out the real reason, something like 'my smartphone controlling my freetime activities and distracting me from work'. Then, you have a way more detailed idea of what strains you and can go from this.
2) Next, ask youself, why you are still doing this unwanted behaviour, why you are not possible to quit it. This could be, for example: 'because I feel the need to keep in touch with my contacts very often' or 'because the smarthphone usage quits my boredness'
3) Think about this reason. Is it a reason that justifies being distracted and controlled? Is it avoidable. there can, of course, be unelimitable reasons, as well, if you, for example, need your smartphone for your work.
4) If it is a reason not so suistable it can be avoided, try in doing so. For that, set up a plan to reduce your behaviour in the certain issue. Reflect every day, how well you have done and how you feel about it.
If the reason is a very good one and it is not possible to quit the whole activity, try out eliminating the part of it, you do not like. As above, make a plan for this and don't forget reflecting your feelings about this.
5) It is very likely not to be helpful setting a certain period of time or number of days forgoing the thing. If doing so, a person is likely to just wait, till the time is over and then continue the bad habit. Instead, start quitting the activity as soon as possible and stick to it.

This is certainly not fasting. But it is a sucessful way to forgo something and actually do good instead of just pretending.
I actually think about fastingmyself. It does not neccessary have to be in the Lent, but I will probalbly try out forgoing food for a few day. for now, it is just an idea, I am not too informed about yet.
